Novak Djokovic beat Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets to win the gold medal for Serbia on Sunday (August 4). It was the Serbian’s first tournament win this year and probably the biggest of his career. With that, the tennis tournament at the Paris Olympics has come to an end.

Heading into the match, Djokovic and Alcaraz had not dropped a set. But the Spaniard was miles ahead of his opponent physically. Despite the troublesome knee, the Serbian played as best as he had in his career to beat the energetic Alcaraz.

At no point in the match did the players let their intensities drop. Both did come very close to breaking one another but were unable to. They challenged each other in every way possible. From running across the courts to well-timed drop shots, they went in all guns blazing, which kept the viewers entertained for nearly two and a half hours.

Djokovic took the first set with a couple of mini-breaks in the tie-break and repeated the same in the second set, sealing the match 7-6(3),7-6(2) and with it claiming the Olympic gold medal. He immediately fell to the ground and cried uncontrollably.

Unfortunately, he picked up an injury at the French Open but fought hard to regain fitness for Wimbledon, followed by the Olympics. Djokovic decided not to play the doubles and gave it his all in the singles. Beating player after player, the 24-time Singles Grand Slam champion proved to the world that he cannot be written off.

It was not all disappointment for Alcaraz, on the other hand, as he won the silver medal for Spain on his debut Games. He gave a tough fight but it was not enough to trouble Djokovic. Lorenzo Musetti defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime to win the bronze medal and complete the podium.
