Magic Johnson and Family Visit Sicily — and the ‘White Lotus’ Hotel! — as He Gets Back to European Vacation
The NBA legend’s next stop on his European vacation tour was Sicily, Italy, and he couldn’t stop gushing about it.
Johnson uploaded numerous photos to Instagram on Monday showing him and his family relaxing in the elegant San Domenico Palace in Taormina. Having returned to the Johnsons’ 296-foot chartered boat, the Phoenix II, Magic continued the family’s current tour of the continent after a quick visit to Washingtоn, D.C. to announce that he and Josh Harris, along with other investors, had purchased the Washingtоn Commanders football team.
The basketball player captioned the image, “Today, my family and I had a wonderful time at the San Domenico Palace, Taormina, a Four Seasons Hotel in Sicily, where we enjoyed an incredible dinner at Restaurant Anciovi.”
Fun fact: Season 2 of White Lotus was filmed there! The hotel is filled with artwork and antiquities from the nineteenth century. If you ever find yourself in Sicily, Italy, I highly suggest you check into this hotel and dine at Anciovi. The website for San Domenico Palace states that it is perched high above the Ionian Sea on a rocky outcrop. The hotel’s gardens, infinity pool, and Michelin-starred restaurant are just a few of the delights.
David Bernad, executive producer of The White Lotus, told PEOPLE in 2016 that the hotel has so much character that they filmed season 2 there. “Taormina is this very ancient city up in the hills, and you feel the history and the life that’s been lived there,” he remarked.
Johnson and his family have been touring Europe for the past few weeks, and he’s been updating Instagram with photographs from their trip. Recently, his wife Cookie, along with their children and grandchildren, have joined in on the merriment.
“Cookie and I can’t wait to spend time with our children and grandchildren — Andre, EJ, Elisa, our son-in-law Lisa, and Gigi and Joey,” said Cookie. The crew of the boat had a ’70s-themed party at one point during the cruise. The team of Phoenix II did a fantastic job of throwing a 1970s theme party for us the other night. The group said, “We all dressed up and had a blast!!” Johnson wrote with a photo of himself and his friends, which included actor Samuel L. Jackson.
In another post, Johnson said that he had been accompanied on his trip by a number of notable pals, including another NBA great: “Tonight we enjoyed an incredible dinner at the world-famous Da Paolino Ristorante aka the lemon tree restaurant in Capri, Italy!” I also got to spend time with Sam and LaTanya Jackson, Judge Greg and Linda Mathis, John and Vicki Palmer, and my good buddy and the greatest basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan, and his wife Yvette.
