The record-breаking signing for Chelsea Following his record £115 million transfer, Moises Caicedo phoned Blues veteran Gianfranco Zola to ask for his legendary shirt number 25.
The midfielder, who represents Ecuador internationally, participated in his first training session on Wednesday at the club’s Cobham training base.
The Blues have the option to extend his eight-year deal by a year, taking it to 2032.
Although Caicedo wаnted to maintain the No. 25 shirt he wore while with Brighton, no player had worn that number at Stamford Bridge in 20 years, ever since the legendary Italian forward Gianfranco Zola departed.
Caicedo contacted the Italian after moving to west London to ask if he would be okay with letting him wear the No. 25 shirt for Chelsea.
“I’m so honored to wear this jersey,” Caicedo gushed. After a conversation, Gianfranco Zola gave me his approval.
What this figure signifies to you is not lost on me. I went with that particular number since it has a lot of meaning to me and my loved ones. With this jersey number on my back, I plan on making a lot of special moments with Chelsea.
The former Italy international responded with gratitude for the letter, saying, “Thank you, Moises.” I want for you the same joys I experienced while reading it. Best wishes.
During his time with Chelsea (from 1996 to 2003), Zola scored 80 goals in 312 games and helped the club win multiple trophies, including two FA Cups.
”I appreciate the message, Moises,” he said.
I pray it brings you as much joy as it did to me. Best wishes.
On Sunday, Mauricio Pochettino’s team will take a trip across London to take on West Ham, and Caicedo is slated to make his debut in that match.
In their Premier League season opener at Stamford Bridge, the Blues were held to a 1-1 draw by Liverpool.
